The Jubilee leadership conference is a project aimed at propping president Michael’ son Mulenga as the next president of Zambia and it’s codenamed “born 64’, the Zambian Watchdog maintains.
On Thursday, one of the organisers of the conference Stanley Mhango issued a statement refuting the earlier revelations by the Watchdog that Vernon Mwaanga and Maureen Mwanawasa are among the many eminent Zambians that have been conned by Emmanuel Mwamba and Anthony Mukwita to support the power transfer to president Michael Sata’s son Mulenga.
The press release, compiled by Emanuel Mwamba, Kellys Kaunda and Mhango but circulated by Cleopas Phiri, stated that ‘Leadership Conferences Foundation (LFC) is non-profit organization set up by Oscar Chavula, Beatrice Mwila, Kellys Kaunda, Nakiwe Simpungwe, Stanley Mhango, Emmanuel Mwamba, James Mwenda and Cleophas Phiri as mere pioneers to bring Zambians together and promote the agenda of Zambia as the foremost goal.’
But the Watchdog learnt that the project was actually started by Peni Mwamba, president Sata’s grandson (Mulenga’s nephew). According to people close to the project, Peni Mwamba first conned former Oasis Forum chairperson Rev Japheth Ndhlovu while at Harvard in USA.
Dr Ndhlovu’s role is to mobilize resources from the once funders of the Oasis Forum Immediately Peni returned to Lusaka he shared the idea with Emmanuel Mwamba, who brought in Antony Mukwita. Mukwita suggested that they bring in a neutral person on-board to handle the media side of the project because Antony and Emmanuel were tainted. They were both fired from government.
‘That’s how Kellys Kaunda (Now with the help of Maureen Nkandu) was brought on board. Kellys’job also includes talking to influential members of the community to show solidarity with the movement. Stanley Mhango is tasked to recruit from the various civil society organizations while Telesphore Mpundu brings the Catholic Church,’ explained one source.
‘It’s amazing that a lot of learned people were not able to see through this project but just foolishly agreed to jump on board. The movement’s main agenda is to keep the presidency in a ‘particular grouping’ and prop up Mulenga Sata.
Zambia’s 50 years of independence is just used to hoodwink the masses because most people would pay attention to such rhetoric. One or two people in the group are genuine and do not know they are being used; others are in there purely for money.
‘There will be several other conferences in various provinces and Mulenga will travel to all these as a speaker and symbol of youthful leadership.
‘Structures have and continue been formed in all the provinces and they will be used as launch pads for Mulenga’s presidential campaigns,’ one of the sources explained.
According to insiders, clandestine meetings are organised at night and in these dark corner meetings, Mulenga is the only one who is made to meet leaders from student unions and civil society. Other would-be speakers are not even aware of these meetings.
The main idea was that at the end of the conference, Vernon Mwanga would handover a torch to Mulenga Sata to signify shift of power from the old generation to the new generation–the same way prophets in Bible anointed new Kings. But after the Watchdog revelation, this will not happen and instead a number of ‘freedom fighters’ will handover torches to younger members in the audience. But Mulenga will be among the recipients of the torch and most likely from Vernon Mwanga. Guess which pictures will be in the newspapers the next day? Peni Mwamba has so far held preparatory meetings in Ndola, Kitwe and Kasama.
Among the people invited to give speeches at the conference is Mulenga Sata, Cornelius Mweetwa from UPND, Muhabi Lungu from MMD, Bishop John Mambo, Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu, Vernon Mwaanga and Maureen Mwanawasa.
Mhango said in a statement on Thursday said that ‘we have also picked Lusaka Mayor, Mulenga Sata and Zambia’s youngest Mayor, the Mayor of Luanshya.’ While the mayor of Luanshya was picked for being the youngest mayor, if this is true, Mhango did not explain why they picked Mulenga Sata.
The Watchdog has never said Mulenga cannot or should not be president of Zambia. What the Watchdog has always said is that Mulenga should not use the same evil methods such as tribalism and corruption he used to become mayor of Lusaka.
